How Should Facility managers prepare for the 5G?

It is no doubt a clear notion that the building owners who want to stay competitive should have to provide an increase in the bandwidth and also reduction in latency so that they can meet the demands from the tenants. In other words, the facility managers should prepare for the 5G. This can be done in a way by turning in the building cellular distributed antenna system (DAS). Even though the DAS has been deployed since the introduction of 3G, the adoption of it is limited.

These deployments have lagged the new mobile wireless technology introductions in the macro-cellular network. It has been said by Philip Sorrells, the vice president of strategic marketing of CommScope that only about 2 per cent of the enterprise building has the mobility in the building. There were carriers before, who would finance the deployment of the in-building cellular DAS. But with the past few years, the building owners have started to recognise the added value of providing the cell coverage within the buildings where this percentage is likely to be increased.

Another advantage of the in-building cellular DAS is that it addresses the problem which is posed by the new building envelope technologies. These technologies are said to increase the mechanical efficiencies, but they also are supposed to be blocking the cell signals from the outside sites. To be competitive in the future, the buildings will require the DAS designs which support the 3G, 4G, and 5G cellular technologies. The DAS support of the 3G and 4G signalling will need to be continued since there is a delay in the subscriber uptake of the new technologies and the 4G technology is said to be used to connect to the subscribers for the next 20 years. Thus, 5G should be augmented and also coexist with the current cellular technologies rather than replacing the other technologies.

The facility managers should pay attention since 5G is not just a high-tech perk because it is something which every commercial office will demand shortly. The employees already yearn for insatiable internet access which is instant so that work can be done swiftly. 5G is said to be a significant development not only in the world of technology but also in the world of real estate, and it is for this reason that the building owners and the facilities and asset manager should be prepared if they want to put their best foot forward in the competitive world.

This wireless technology will take a revolutionary leap regarding not only speed but also response time, energy efficiency and network reliability. 5G will provide speed from 400 Mbps to more than 10 gigabits.
